The incessant rains in Mumbai that have continued since Janmashtami will lash the city further on Saturday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘yellow alert’.
According to IMD’s forecast, the city along with neighbouring districts of Thane, Raigad and Palghar may witness more heavy rainfall, coupled with thunderstorms and lightning.
Meteorologists and weather experts have attributed the heavy rains to the movement of the Low Pressure Area weather system towards Chhattisgarh, a report in Indian Express stated.
Meanwhile, heavy rain in Maharashtra over the last days have led to water of Godavari river to flow at a higher capacity than usual. Several small temples were reported to be submerged. Some feared that the water could flow at above danger level if the situation continued.
Maharashtra Rain Updates in Points:
• Areas that could maximum rain include Thane, Palghar. Washim Nandurbar, Pune and Nashik. Local reports stated that light to moderate rain has continued in Washim district since Friday night.
• Some pictures from Washim showed an increase in the downpour on Saturday morning. The rain, however, has proved advantageous for the farmers as the kharif crops were on the verge of failure due to August heat.
• Navapur taluka of Nandurbar district has been receiving heavy rain for the last two days, a local report stated. The river in the area has been overflowing due to heavy downpour. Ten villages have been cut off as the bridge on the Khoksa-Chinchpada road in Nawapur taluka has been washed away.
• A report stated that water has accumulated in low-lying areas of Mumbai. Areas that saw excessive rainfall include Kurla, Ghatkopar, Chembur, Bhandup and Mulund. This led to waterlogging in low-lying areas on the LBS route.
• In Nashik district, Chankapur, Amburdi, Jamshet and Abhona areas in the western belt of Kalwan taluka received heavy rainfall. The situation is likely to reap benefits for agricultural crops such as soybeans and maize.
• Parts of Mumbai received heavy rainfall on Friday. The suburbs received 70 mm of rainfall between 8.30 am to 5.30 pm, the IMD said, issuing a yellow alert (heavy rainfall) for parts of the suburbs for Saturday.
• The Colaba weather station in south Mumbai recorded 46 mm of rainfall between 8.30 am to 5.30 pm and a maximum temperature of 27.7 degrees Celsius, while the Santacruz weather station in the western suburbs recorded 70.3 mm of rainfall with maximum temperature of 28.8 degrees Celsius.
