James Gunn’s DC Universe (DCU) is inching closer towards casting Kara Zor-El, popularly known as Supergirl, and recent reports suggest that Milly Alcock and Meg Donnelly are among the top contenders. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that both actresses, known for their roles in House of the Dragon and Disney Channel’s Zombies franchise, respectively, underwent screen tests in Atlanta, USA. During the audition process, apart from the production team, DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran were also present, marking a crucial step in the casting process. Meanwhile, Supergirl’s introduction is expected to happen in Superman: Legacy before she takes the lead in her standalone movie, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
Screen tests for the Supergirl role happened on January 24. While Alcock is recognised for her role in Game of Thrones prequel series, Donnelly is already familiar with the DC character, as she has previously lent her voice for Supergirl in Legion of Super Heroes and the Justice League trilogy. As per reports, the Supergirl standalone movie is linked to Tom King’s 2021-2022 comic series, and is still in the development phase. Meanwhile, Ana Nogueira, best known for The Vampire Diaries, The Blacklist and other hit shows, is reportedly on board as the screenwriter.
Contrary to earlier expectations, Sasha Calle reprising her Supergirl role from The Flash no longer appears to be on the table. Despite her previous discussions with James Gunn, it seems the team is inclined towards exploring new casting options. Earlier, reports also indicated that Cailee Spaeny, known for her role in Priscilla and Emilia Jones, the star of CODA, were also among the contenders for Supergirl’s role, but it seems like Milly Alcock and Meg Donnelly are leading in the race.
Earlier, when Gunn was revealing the upcoming DC projects in January 2023, he spoke about Supergirl’s character and said, “In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”
As of now, Superman: Legacy is scheduled for release on July 11, 2025, which will feature David Corenswet portraying Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan taking on the role of Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult bringing the iconic character Lex Luther to life. However, the release date for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is yet to be disclosed.
