Honouring the final wishes of the late legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, her family has donated a sum of Rs 10 lakh to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) on her behalf.
In a letter addressed to the TTD, Mangeshkar’s family informed the temple trust about her desire to contribute Rs 10 lakh in her will. Personally reaching out to the TTD’s board member from Mumbai, Milind Keshav Narvekar, her sister Usha Mangeshkar requested him to present the donation to the temple on behalf of the Mangeshkar family. On Monday, Narvekar handed over the donation cheque to the TTD executive officer A.V. Dharma Reddy, in the presence of TTD chairman Bhumana Karunakar Reddy at Tirumala.
Lata Mangeshkar held a deep reverence for Lord Venkateswara and had previously served as the Tirupati trust’s court musician. In 2010, she performed around 10 Tallapaka Annamacharya Sankeertanas, which were recorded by TTD’s S.V. recording project and later released as audio CDs titled “Annamayya Swara Latharchana”.
Lata Mangeshkar was 92 when she breathed her last. She left a legacy behind of beautiful evergreen songs. She is lovingly referred to as the ‘Nightingale of India’. She stepped into singing at the age of 13 and recorded her first song in 1942. In her career spanning seven decades, she has to her credit over 30,000 songs in different languages. Lata Mangeshkar has been the voice behind popular tracks like ‘Ek Pyar Ka Nagma Hai’, ‘Raam Teri Ganga Maili’, ‘Ek Radha Ek Meera’ and ‘Didi Tera Devar Deewana’ to name a few.
Lata Mangeshkar received several prestigious awards, including Padma Bhushan in 1969, Padma Vibhushan in 1999, and Bharat Ratna in 2001 – India’s highest civilian honors. Additionally, she was honoured with France’s top civilian award, ‘Officier de la Legion d’Honneur’ in 2009.
