The brightest stars from around the globe are gearing up for the highly anticipated Golden Globe Awards 2024, scheduled for Sunday, January 7. This event, renowned for its grand celebration of excellence in film and television, marks the commencement of the awards season in Hollywood. The glamorous affair will be broadcast live from Beverly Hills, California. Traditionally dominated by Hollywood films and music, the Golden Globes have also witnessed India making a mark in recent years by securing prestigious awards. Although no Indian film or original soundtrack has garnered nominations this year, it’s worth reflecting on India’s noteworthy journey at the Golden Globe Awards in recent times.

India At The Golden Globes

1. The relationship dates back to 1957 when the film Do Ankhen Barah Haath became the first Indian film to bag a Golden Globe nomination. It was notably seven decades back when no one had ever dreamt of such a feat. Directed by V Shantaram, the film earned a Silver Bear at the 8th Berlin International Film Festival followed by a Samuel Goldwyn International Film Award.

2. Next in 1983, Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi was also nominated at the Golden Globe awards under various categories including Best Actor, Best Screenplay, New Star of the Year, and Best Director. While the film won all the fronts, it later went on to win 11 Academy Award nominations.

3. One of the most talented music directors that India has ever produced, the music maestro himself, AR Rahman became the first Indian to win a Golden Globe in 2009 for his outstanding soundtrack and background music composed for the 2007 film Slumdog Millionaire. He also won two Academy Awards for the same.

4. Coming to the recent one, SS Rajamouli’s blockbuster hit film RRR emerged as one of the biggest hits last year. After storming the Indian box office, the film’s song Naatu Naatu clearly became a global pop culture juggernaut. It created history after bagging a Golden Globe award in the Best Original Song category and later also an Academy award. The film stars Ram Charan and Jr NTR. It also features a cameo role by actress Alia Bhatt.

Indian Celebrities At The Globes

Besides Indian films and music, there have been also times when Indian celebrities also made an impression at the Golden Globe, especially on the Golden Globes red carpet.

1. A global icon in herself, Priyanka Chopra leads the line with the most number of appearances on the Golden Globe red carpet. She made her rocking debut in 2017 in a body-hugging sequin gown and has been a regular attendee since then. She next attended her second Golden Globes with her husband Nick Jonas in 2020. It was two years after they got married and were also listed among the best-dressed guests.

2. Having worked in the Hollywood film XXX: Return of Xander Cage alongside Vin Diesel, Deepika Padukone also attended Golden Globes Awards in 2017. She opted for a stunning yellow Ralph Lauren gown.

3. Former Miss India Manasvi Mamgai made her Golden Globe debut in 2019, dressed in a satin pastel pink sari on the red carpet.

4. Versatile Indian actress and a style icon in herself, Neena Gupta also attended the award ceremony in 2019. She opted for an off-white coloured saree by designer Wendell Rodrick.

The 81st Golden Globe Awards will be streamed live on Lionsgate Play.
