Actor and singer Hannah Waddingham recently praised actor Tom Cruise and called out his critics when she appeared on the Christmas special of James Martin’s Saturday Morning. The Ted Lasso star recently worked with Tom Cruise on Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part Two, which is scheduled for release on May 23, 2025, after a delay of almost a year caused by the SAG-AFTRA strike. Waddingham recalled how she spent “five intense days” with Cruise on the USS George HW Bush fighter carrier to shoot the high-budget action film. Calling out the critics of Cruise, she said, “I have to say, I have a real problem with anybody that goes at him now.”
The 49-year-old actor continued, “He is without doubt one of the loveliest and encouraging, positive and inspiring human beings I have ever met. Isn’t he gorgeous? I have no time for anyone saying anything about him.”
Cruise is one of the most successful actors in Hollywood. However, despite his success, over the years he has been subject to many controversies, most of which are related to his association with the Church of Scientology, which many believe is a cult.
Most recently, at the Golden Globes awards ceremony in January 2023, host Jerrod Carmichael, roasted Cruise for for his open association with Scientology. Carmichael referred to Shelly Miscavige, the wife of Scientology leader David Miscavige who has not made any public appearance since 2007, and said, “Backstage, I found the awards that Tom Cruise returned. I have a pitch. I think maybe we take these three things and exchange them for the safe return of Shelly Miscavige.”
Many also believe that Scientology’s elusive rules also dictate Cruise’s personal life. Interestingly, Cruise divorced his three wives when they turned 33 years old. He married Mimi Rogers in 1987 and divorced her in 1990 as she turned 33. Then he married Nicole Kidman in 1990 and divorced her in 2001, the year when she was 33. Lastly, he married Katie Holmes in 2006 and divorced her in 2012, when she was 33. Additionally, each of his ex-wives is 11 years younger than the last. Mimi Rogers is 67-years-old, Nicole Kidman is 56-years-old, and Katie Holmes is 45-years-old.
While some people think that these two age-related patterns point to Scientology’s secret beliefs, others think it is a mere coincidence.
In 2005, Tom Cruise sparred with actor Brooke Shields who admitted using antidepressants for her postpartum depression in her memoir ‘Down Came the Rain.’ Cruise appeared on Today Show shortly after the memoir was published and said, “The thing that I’m saying about Brooke is that there’s misinformation. She doesn’t understand the history of psychiatry. She doesn’t know what these drugs are, and for her to promote it is irresponsible.”
Shields responded by penning an op-ed piece for the New York Times, in which she indirectly chided Cruise for his association with Scientology and wrote, “Tom should stick to saving the world from aliens and let women who are experiencing postpartum depression decide what treatment options are best for them.”
