Actor Napoleon (Kumaresan Duraisamy) is one of the most memorable names from the era of 80s and 90s Tamil language cinema. The veteran actor was deemed an iconic personality, identified by his muscular appearance and signature moustache. In an earlier media interaction, the actor revealed how superstar Rajinikanth did not like his antagonist role in the film Yajaman, revealing a reason for it.
In the 1993 movie Yajaman, Napoleon was seen in the role of Vallavarayan, which later became one of his many iconic villainous portrayals. However, Rajinikanth, the film’s lead did not want Napoleon to take on that role, according to Napoleon himself.
According to the actor, when the director of the film, RV Udayakumar, narrated the story to Rajinikanth, he wanted to know who was cast as the antagonist in the project. So, when he came to know that Napoleon was going to be it, the superstar reportedly stated, “He is a budding actor, I don’t know if he will come right to act in this role.” Rajinikanth added that since the character is older than him, an older actor would be a better fit, stating Napoleon is younger than him and expressing his doubts about whether he would be able to act. The superstar then suggested, “Why don’t you replace him with a popular actor like Radha Ravi?”
To this, the director replied, “Napoleon would be perfect for this role. He is younger than MGR and has acted as an uncle and brother, it would be nice to have a youthful look.” So, Rajinikanth went ahead with the choice.
When Rajinikanth watched the film during its dubbing, he was so impressed with Napoleon that he called him, revealed the actor. He reportedly told him, “You will get more popularity than me in the film.” To such a compliment, Napoleon humbly replied, “Sir, you are a big actor, if you don’t have this film, another film will give you a name, I think I will get recognition only through this film.” The film also starred Meena, Aishwarya and MN Nambiar. It was made under the AVM Productions banner.
