Superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal have been the favourites of Malayalam movie lovers and enjoy a huge fan base. Did you know that back in the day, the actors had shared the screen in a film as father and son? Yes, you heard it right.
The actors played important roles of father and son in the 1982 epic period movie Padayottam, directed by Jijo Punnoose.
Both the superstars Mohanlal and Mammootty have worked together in various popular films, portraying versatile roles and unique characters. But in Padayottam they appeared as a father-son duo, despite only having a 9-year age gap in real life.
Interestingly, the role of Kamaran, played by Mammootty, went on to become a breakthrough for the actor, who largely stayed away from older roles after that.
Padayottam is produced by Navodaya Appachan under the banner of Navodaya Pictures. The film is partially based on the 1844 novel, The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas, with a screenplay written by N. Govindan Kutty.
Apart from the superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal, the film also stars Prem Nazir, Madhu, Lakshmi, Shankar, Poornima Bhagyaraj, N. Govindan Kutty and Thikkurissy Sukumaran Nair in the key roles.
According to reports, Padayottam was a big-budget film with a production cost of Rs 1 crore when the average cost for a Malayalam film was Rs 15 lakh at that time, making it the most expensive Malayalam film made until then.
The music was composed by Guna Singh with lyrics by Kavalam Narayana Panicker. The film was released in India during the Onam festival of Kerala on September 1, 1982. It was a blockbuster at the box office and became the highest-grossing Malayalam film of the time.
Mammootty was recently seen in the Malayalam-language action comedy film Turbo. It is directed by Vysakh, written by Midhun Manuel Thomas and produced by Mammootty under Mammootty Kampany. The film stars Mammootty in the titular role, alongside Raj B. Shetty, Sunil, Kabir Duhan Singh, Anjana Jayaprakash, Niranjana Anoop, Bindu Panicker, Dileesh Pothan and Shabareesh Varma in supporting roles.
On the other hand, Mohanlal was last seen in the epic action drama film Malaikottai Vaaliban. The film stars Mohanlal in a dual role, alongside Sonalee Kulkarni, Hareesh Peradi and Danish Sait in the supporting roles.
