Vijayaraghavan Wins Best Character Role At 54th Kerala State Film Awards For Pookkaalam

Veteran actor Vijayaraghavan bagged the Best Character Role (Male) award for his performance in the Malayalam language comedy drama film Pookkaalam at the 54th Kerala State Film Awards on Friday. Directed by Ganesh Raj, the film which was released in April last year, also starred Basil Joseph, Vineeth Sreenivasan and Roshan Mathew in pivotal roles.

In the film, Vijayaraghavan,71, played the role of a 100-year-old man named Ittoop. The actor garnered much appreciation from fans and critics alike. The film was also showcased at the 54th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa.

Prominently known for his work in Malayalam cinema, Vijayaraghavn made his acting debut with the 1973 film Kaapalika and later appeared in several big regional films like Ammakkorumma, Surumaitta Kannukal, PC:369, Witness, Manasiloru Manimuthu, Adikkurippu and Ekalavyan among others.

He was last seen in the Malayalam-language action drama film Antony. Helmed by Joshiy, the film starred Joju George, Kalyani Priyadarshan, Chemban Vinod Jose and Nyla Usha in pivotal roles.

Meanwhile, talking about the 54th Kerala State Film Awards, actor Prithviraj Sukumaran’s survival thriller Aadujeevitham-The Goat Life bagged nine awards including Best Actor, Best Director and Best Popular Film.

The Jeo Baby directorial, Kathal The Core, produced by Mammootty Kampany, was adjudged the Best Film. Veteran actresses Urvashi and Beena R Chandran shared the award for Best Actress for their performances in the films Ullozhukku and Thadavu.

The Best Second Film award was given to Iratta. Directed by Rohit MG Krishnan, the film starred Joju George, Martin Prakkat and Sijo Vadakkan. Rohit also won the award for best scriptwriter for the film. Actress Sreeshma Chandran bagged the Best Actor in a Character Role (Female) award for her performance in the film Pembilai Orumai.

The awards were announced by Kerala Culture Minister Saji Cherian on Friday with the jury chaired by acclaimed director and screenwriter Sudhir Mishra. The jury also included directors Priyanandanan and Lijo Jose Pellissery, cinematographer Alagappan N and writer N S Madhavan who selected the winners from over 160 entries.
