On August 1, the Tamil Film Producers’ Council (TFPC) is set to have an emergency executive committee meeting. Reportedly, the council has issued a red card to Raayan actor Dhanush, citing that he received an advance payment for a film from Sri Thenandal Films, but never turned up for the shoot last year. Now the association has strictly instructed the filmmakers to first take it up with the council before signing up Dhanush for a film. In fact, Tamil actor Vishal too has been reportedly issued a red card for misusing council’s funds, while he was the TFPC President. Following the Producers’ Council’s statement regarding Dhanush’s “uncooperativeness with his films”, this emergency executive committee meeting will be held. The meeting will discuss various issues which include reducing actors’ salaries and keeping the production costs of the films low. Apart from this, the council will also discuss the next steps of their plan of action.
Reportedly, no new film shoots will commence from August 16 and all the ongoing projects need to be concluded by the end of October. The decision has been taken to ensure the backlog of pending films that are stuck in various stages of production. The Actors’ Association has condemned the move.
On Tuesday, several South Indian Artistes Association members including actor Karthi and Poochi S Murugan reacted against the decision. As per report, Karthi said, “We have been taking measures to solve the issues that the Producers Council had previously stated, and hence, it’s shocking that they have released the same without consulting us with a complaint about the concerns.” Stakeholders have also raised concerns about the regulations’ implementation.
Actor Shanthnu Bhagyaraj said in an interview that “high-end technicians and top actors” can manage if the shoots get cancelled or deferred; but, he is concerned about the daily wagers and character artists. Actor-producer J Sathish Kumar is in favour of these measures laid down by the TFPC. He believes that there are a few films that rely just on theatrical revenues because OTT and satellite rights might not always be profitable even with A and B-listers. He pointed out that the fees of the actors have soared high. He also is in favour of halting the commencement of new films till August 16 since more than 250 films are yet unreleased.
For now, the conclusion of the meeting is awaited.
