Achieving a dominant presence at the box office as a married couple is a rare and difficult milestone to reach. However, there’s one adorable and talented couple in Hollywood who just made it happen. Ryan Reynolds, 47 and Blake Lively, 36, have made history by becoming the first married couple in 34 years to have their films hold the No. 1 and No. 2 spots at the box office simultaneously. Lively’s film, It Ends With Us, which premiered on August 9, has already brought in $50 million (approx. 419 crores), placing it just behind her husband and actor Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine. Reynolds’ film has grossed over $54 million (approx. 453 crores) this weekend and $494.3 million (approx. 4147 crores) domestically since its release on July 26.
The last time a married couple achieved this feat was in 1990, with Demi Moore and Bruce Willis. That year, Willis’ Die Hard 2 hit theaters on July 3, followed by Moore’s Ghost less than two weeks later. At one point, Die Hard 2 and Ghost were the top two films at the box office. Ghost even went on to receive five Oscar nominations and ended up winning two. By the end of the year, Ghost had become the second-highest-grossing film domestically in 1990. It earned $217.6 million (approx. 176 crores), while Die Hard 2 secured the No. 8 spot with $117.5 million (approx. 98 crores), informs People.
Moore, 61 and Willis, 69, had reportedly met at a screening of Stakeout in 1987. They got married to each other that same year and had three daughters before they split up in 2000. However, the two actors co-parented their children and continue to maintain a close friendship. Willis and Moore starred together in three movies, Mortal Thoughts in 1991, Beavis and Butt-Head Do America in 1996 and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle in 2003.
On the other hand, the current stars, Lively and Reynolds have worked together in Green Lantern (2011) and IF (2024). Lively also made a cameo appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine as Ladypool. Both Deadpool & Wolverine and It Ends with Us are currently in theaters.
