Just when you start thinking the television industry cannot reach a new low, it surprises you. They do it out loud enough to make sure you witness their regressing journey sitting at home, in front of your television sets. Gone are the days when daily soaps like Dekh Bhai Dekh, Family No 1 and Sarabhai VS Sarabhai were the supreme reigners, now the plot is all about cringe, more cringe, and some more cringe.
A few months ago, we saw the female protagonist of a popular show turn into a fly; and in another one, a gorilla was romancing the female lead. This one features no such animals, but can leave you cringing further. The makers of Pehredaar Piya Ki, featuring Tejaswi Prakash Wayangankar, Afaan Khan and Suyyash Rai, decided to unveil the first promo of the show. If the promo is anything to go by, the show revolves around the story of an adult woman who marries a 10-year-old boy to safeguard him.
The one-minute long video begins with a long frame shot of the lehenga-clad female protagonist getting ready and putting on heavy antique jewellery in what looks like a palace.
In no time, the frame shifts and sees her calling out for someone named Ratan Sa saying, "Ratan Sa.. Agar aap taiyaar hai toh chale?" while casually taking out a gun from the drawer and putting it in her purse.
And that's when the 10-year-old Ratan Sa makes his heroic entry.
While you keep wishing for the story to take another turn or a twist that claims him to be her son/brother to pop up, Ratan Sa rushes, gets a stool to stand upon and puts sindoor on her forehead.
And you see her slowly getting teary-eyed.
While not much of the plot is revealed from the promo, it clearly sheds light on the "unique" and 'new-age' love story the makers are about to offer. Whether it'll be as cringe-worthy as its first promo or things will be put into a better perspective - remains to be seen.
