Fresh from his Oscar-winning turn in Everything Everywhere All at Once, Ke Huy Quan returns with a thrilling new adventure in Love Hurts. Taking on the role of Marvin Gable, a mild-mannered Milwaukee realtor with a mysterious past, Quan’s character is thrust back into the dangerous world of crime. The gripping trailer hints at his struggle to survive and reclaim his quiet life in real estate, setting the stage for an action-packed and emotional journey.
Universal unveiled the trailer for Love Hurts on Tuesday, giving a glimpse into Marvin’s life being turned upside-down after his former accomplice Rose (Ariana DeBose) tracks him down. With his brother Knuckles (Daniel Wu) also pursuing him hard, Marvin must reunite with Rose to return to his relatively safe life.
“Gable receives a crimson envelope from Rose (Ariana DeBose), a former partner-in-crime that he had left for dead. She’s not happy. Now, Marvin is thrust back into a world of ruthless hitmen, filled with double-crosses and open houses turned into deadly warzones. With his brother Knuckles (Daniel Wu), a volatile crime lord, hunting him, Marvin must confront the choices that haunt him and the history he never truly buried," the film’s official synopsis reads.
The film comes from 87North, the acclaimed production house behind projects like Nobody, Violent Night, and The Fall Guy, along with the popular John Wick franchise. Love Hurts also marks the directorial debut of JoJo Eusebio, who has prior experience in stunt work in John Wick and The Avengers. David Leitch produced the film alongside his wife Kelly McCormick and Guy Danella, while the script has been written by Matthew Murray & Josh Stoddard, and Luke Passmore. Besides Quan, DeBose, and Wu, Love Hurts also features actors like Sean Astin, Mustafa Shakir, Lio Tipton, Rhys Darby, Marshawn Lynch, and André Eriksen.
The film is ready to hit theatres on February 7, 2025.
Quan, who recently won the Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars last year, is known for a memorable career as a child actor. He began working in the 80s, appearing in films like The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. His performance in A24’s 2022 movie led him to major projects, including the Disney+ series Loki and American-born Chinese.
Currently, he also has The Electric State and Zootopia 2 lined up for release.
