Former One Direction member Liam Payne had a potent cocktail of drugs in his system at the time of his death, according to a partial autopsy report. The 31-year-old singer, who passed away last Wednesday at a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was found to have multiple substances in his body, including cocaine, crack cocaine and benzodiazepines—commonly prescribed sedatives sold under the names Valium and Xanax.
A toxicology test also revealed that Payne had consumed “pink cocaine,” a recreational drug known as Tusi. This dangerous substance is often a mix of methamphetamine, ketamine, and MDMA, according to the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). In a recent warning, the DEA noted that this drug blend has been spreading in several locations, including Manhattan, New York.
Payne was staying at a hotel in Buenos Aires when staff became concerned about his behaviour. They reported to local authorities that a guest was acting erratically and appeared to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The hotel employees told emergency services they feared the individual, later identified as Payne, “could do something that threatens (his) life,” as he was staying in a third-story room with a balcony.
Within ten minutes, emergency responders arrived at the scene but tragically found Payne’s body in the courtyard of the hotel. He was pronounced dead shortly after. The preliminary postmortem report suggested that Payne died due to multiple traumas and both internal and external bleeding.
In the wake of the tragic news, impromptu vigils were held by fans in New York, London and Paris over the weekend. Payne’s former One Direction bandmates—Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan—issued a joint statement through the band’s official Instagram account.
“We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly,” they wrote. The band added, “The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and fans. We will miss him terribly. We love you, Liam.”
