Kamal Haasan Didn't Want to Do Indian in 1996, Says He Hiked Fee To Avoid Film: 'I Had That Problem...'
Kamal Haasan will be seen in Indian 2 (releasing as Hindustani 2 in Hindi) 28 years after he starred in Indian.

Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan is returning with the Indian franchise after 28 years. The actor will be seen playing the lead in Indian 2. However, at the trailer launch of the Hindi version of the film, Hindustani 2, Kamal confessed he didn’t want to be a part of the 1996 film in the first place. So much so, he hiked his fee hoping that S Shankar would back out on his own but instead, the producers met his fee expectations.

“The Shankar that should be today, with all the experience, I have seen (those qualities) in the first film. He was very confident. As a matter of fact, I was not too willing to do the movie because I had another (offered/with me which was) very similar. Actors have this problem, they want to do this movie and not the other movie, I had that problem too. But he never budged. So I raised my fee, but the producer didn’t move. The director said that if I made a movie, I would make it with only this gentleman, and he was confident like a very savvy, seasoned director, which surprised me a lot,” Kamal said.

Shankar and Kamal also confirmed that Indian 2 is connected with the first film. Indian 2 marks the return of Kamal as Senapathy. However, the film features a new cast. Indian 2 features a huge cast including Siddharth, Kajal Aggarwal, Rahul Preet Singh, Samuthirakani, Bobby Simha, and Priya Bhavani Shankar. Shankar has also used CGI and body doubles to bring departed actors Vivek and Nedumudi Venu to life on the big screen.

At the trailer launch, Kamal also spoke about the increasing budget of Indian 2. He noted that Covid-19 pandemic and the unfortunate deaths on the sets did cause a delay in the filming and release, however, he lauded director S Shankar and Lyca Productions for not letting go of the film.

Indian 2 is set to release on July 12. The film will clash with Akshay Kumar’s Sarfira.
