James Gunn Shares What Fans Can Expect From DC's Upcoming Creature Commandos Animated Series
James Gunn explained that Creature Commandos will offer something different compared to the more traditional stories we see in MCU. Many reports suggest that the show will have some similarities to the 2021 film Suicide Squad and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.

DC is gearing up to release its latest animated series, Creature Commandos and fans are eager to see how it will stand out from other superhero shows. Unlike Marvel, which has a more streamlined cinematic universe, DC is known for trying new things, taking risks and exploring stories with different tones. Creature Commandos will continue that trend by bringing something fresh and exciting to DC’s lineup. James Gunn, the CEO and director at DC Studios, has shared some insights on how this new show will fit into the larger DC Universe.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn explained that Creature Commandos will offer something different compared to the more traditional stories we see in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Talking about DC’s unique approach, Gunn said, “The thing I’ve always loved about DC Comics is that, while there are mainstream comics that run consistently, there are also tonally distinct ones like Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns, and All-Star Superman.” Gunn added, “It was different from Marvel in that way. That’s something I really want to preserve within the studio—that every project will bring a unique vision from the artists creating it.”

Aside from Creature Commandos, DC Studios is also working on a brand-new Superman movie, which Gunn himself is directing. As for the animated series, it features a group of monstrous characters not only fighting against heroes but also struggling with their own dark pasts. The series has a talented cast, including Anya Chalotra, Frank Grillo, Sean Gunn, Viola Davis, Indira Varma and Zoe Chao, among many others.

Many reports suggest that the show will have some similarities to the 2021 film Suicide Squad and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Both of these films are known for their quirky characters and unique storylines, and it seems Creature Commandos will follow a similar path.

James Gunn himself touched on this, saying, “I’m used to dealing with oddballs, irregular types, and weirdos.” He added, “That’s what Guardians is, and Creature Commandos is kind of like Guardians without the sentimentality. The Guardians are all really good characters at their core, but that isn’t necessarily the case with the creatures,” reports Entertainment Weekly.

The series is about a black-ops team made up of prisoners, which serves as the foundation for the Suicide Squad. So, fans of that kind of gritty, action-packed story will likely enjoy what Creature Commandos has to offer. Creature Commandos will start streaming on December 5.
