Hyderabad: When Suriya Sivakumar entered the Tamil film industry nearly 18 years ago hardly anyone could have imagined that the then 22-year-old actor would go onto become one of the most popular names of southern cinema.
However, that is exactly what happened as he soon established himself as a synonym for commercial success and won over a legion of dedicated fans.
Today, as Suriya celebrates his birthday, we present before you some of his most memorable big screen outings.
Nandha: Directed by the maverick filmmaker Bala, ‘Nandha’ revolved around a young man who is sent to a rehabilitation centre for murdering his father. Touted as a hard hitting drama, the film created quite a stir amongst movie buffs thanks to its shocking climax and captivating performances. Released in 2001, ‘Nandha’ earned tremendous critical acclaim and helped Suriya bag a Tamil Nadu State Film award.
Singam: A runaway hit at the box office, ‘Singam’ is perhaps best remembered for its simple yet gripping storyline. Essaying the role of an honest police officer, Suriya delivered a power-packed performance and pulled off some intense action sequences with absolute ease. Moreover, the actor also shared a crackling rapport with his onscreen love interest Anushka Shetty. Interestingly, nearly a year after its initial release, ‘Singam’ was remade in Hindi as ‘Singham’ with Ajay Devgn in the lead.
Ghajini: Touted as a psychological-thriller and directed by AR Murugadoss, ‘Ghajini’ revolved the heart-wrenching way in which a rich business tycoon’s life is turned upside down after his lover is murdered by a ruthless criminal. Boasting of some riveting fight scenes, the film set the box office on fire and received favourable reviews. Interestingly, ‘Ghajini’ was loosely inspired by Christopher Nolan’s ‘Memento’.
Kaakha Kaakha: Best remembered for the sizzling chemistry between Suriya and Jyothika, this Gautham Vasudev Menon-directed venture proved to be a major critical and commercial success. Boasting of a highly engaging plot, the film revolved around a courageous police officer and his quest for revenge. Essaying his role with tremendous maturity, Suriya delivered a highly watchable performance and earned a Filmfare nomination.
Vanaram Aayiram: Generally regarded as one of the most challenging films of Suriya’s career, ‘Vanaram Aayiram’ featured the actor in a double role. Needless to say, he essayed both characters with finesse and gave strong proof of his growth as a performer. Also featuring Simran and Sameera Reddy in pivotal roles, it won the National award for best feature film in Tamil. Interestingly, Suriya too earned critical acclaim, winning a Filmfare award.
