During a recent press event for the film, Daniel Craig was confronted with a provocative question about the possibility of a gay James Bond. The query came as a surprise during the promotion of his new collaboration with director Luca Guadagnino. But before Craig could address the question, Guadagnino stepped in to offer his own response, saying that the key aspect of James Bond’s character is his ability to complete missions successfully. He then redirected the conversation to discuss Craig’s role in Queer.
“Having said that, I have been an admirer of this gentleman for a long time. … I had this intuition that I suffocated within me because I’m pragmatic. You have to make movies; you cannot daydream,” Guadagnino added.
He also shared a pivotal moment during the casting process for Queer. He recalled a conversation where he got the suggestion to consider casting Craig in the movie. Initially, Guadagnino was skeptical, believing Craig would decline the offer.
“And he said yes. And the yes was a definitive yes, he’s one of the greatest actors. It’s a privilege to work with someone like him,” Guadagnino further said.
Craig’s journey as 007 began in 2006 with Casino Royale, following actor Pierce Brosnan’s departure from the role. Over his tenure, Craig has starred in five Bond films and concluded the iconic role with a dramatic finale in No Time To Die in 2021.
Meanwhile, Craig made a striking appearance at the Venice International Film Festival on Sunday, September 1, for the premier of Queer, accompanied by his wife, Rachel Weisz. Craig’s new hairstyle became a head-turner as he sported light brunette hair with silver strands that made him look almost unrecognisable. He was joined by Guadagnino and co-stars, including Drew Starkey, Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville and Omar Apollo.

A memorable moment from the festival was captured in a video showing acclaimed director Pedro Almodóvar hugging Guadagnino and Craig during the film’s 9-minute standing ovation.

During the film’s press conference, Craig opened up about the experience of filming intimate scenes for Queer. He talked about working with his co-star Starkey, noting their effort to make the scenes natural and enjoyable.
“You know as well as I do, there’s nothing intimate about filming a sex scene on a movie set. There’s a room full of people watching you. We just wanted to make it as touching and as real and as natural as we possibly could. Drew is a wonderful, fantastic, beautiful actor to work with, and we kind of had a laugh. We tried to make it fun,” Craig said.
Queer, based on the novel by William S. Burroughs, is set in 1950s Mexico City. It follows Lee (played by Craig), an American expatriate living a solitary life. His world shifts dramatically upon meeting a young student named Eugene Allerton (played by Starkey). This encounter initiated a journey of self-discovery and emotional connection for Lee.
