Intermittent fasting has become one of the most popular wellness trends across the world. It can be defined as a style of time-restricted eating that reduces the number of calories consumed at certain times of the day or week. This popular weight-cutting strategy, however, can increase the chances of death from heart disease by 91 per cent.
This finding was presented at the medical meeting of the American Heart Association in Chicago on March 18. According to the American Heart Association, the study was reviewed by other experts before its release. This study was carried out by a team led by researcher Victor Zhong of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. They examined data from about 20,000 adults included in the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
In an interview with a portal, researcher Zhong said, “We were surprised to find that people who followed an 8-hour, time-restricted eating schedule were more likely to die from cardiovascular disease. Even though this type of diet has been popular due to its potential short-term benefits, our research clearly shows that, compared with a typical eating time range of 12-16 hours per day, a shorter eating duration was not associated with living longer.”
As per a report by Bloomberg, few doctors have questioned the findings of the research saying they could have been changed by differences- such as underlying heart health – between the fasting patients and their counterparts. The members of these counterparts consumed food over a daily period of 12 to 16 hours.
Besides degrading heart health, there are many other effects of Intermittent Fasting. It can lead to hunger, headaches, fatigue, and mood issues. Bad breath is another side effect that can occur in people who perform intermittent fasting. This is caused by a lack of salivary flow and the rise of acetone (a chemical used to make products like nail polish remover and paint remover) in the breath. If not done properly, intermittent fasting, however, can lead to malnutrition. If you perform very long fasting periods and don’t replenish your body with enough nutrients, you could become malnourished.
