Can Late Workout Sessions Give You Sleepless Nights? Here's What Experts Have To Say
The impact of late-night exercise on sleep varies from person to person. Some may find it energising, while others may experience overstimulation.

It is known to everyone that exercising regularly is important for overall well-being. But equally important is to pick the right time to reap the benefits of sweating it out. A majority opt for exercising during the early hours to increase energy throughout the day, while others, especially late risers, hit the gym late in the evening because of their hectic work schedules. But a long-standing question that echoes through the minds of fitness freaks is- Is exercising before bedtime ideal?

Speaking in a similar vein, Dr Meenakshi Jain, director, of internal medicine, at Max Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi, said, “Exercising at night can impact our sleep schedule, as it raises core body temperature and stimulates the release of adrenaline and endorphins, which can make it harder to fall asleep immediately after a workout,” reported India Today.

Elaborating further, she stated that our circadian rhythm, which controls our sleep-wake cycles, works in reverse. There’s a natural drop in temperature during the night hours as part of this rhythm, telling our bodies that it is time to sleep.

Dr. Meenakshi Jain also suggests avoiding heavy meals right before exercising, as they can cause discomfort during physical activity.

Pros Of Exercising Before Bed

Body temperature regulation

Exercise raises body temperature, and thereafter, the body naturally cools down. This cooling effect can help you fall asleep since it mirrors the body’s natural temperature dip that occurs during the early stages of sleep.

Reduce stress and anxiety

Workouts release endorphins, which can lighten stress and anxiety.

Improved sleep cycle

As per some studies, late-night exercise may improve sleep architecture, leading to a more balanced sleep structure.

Cons Of Exercising Before Bed

Elevated heart rate

Intense exercise increases heart rate and adrenaline levels, making it difficult for some people to relax and fall asleep right after working out.

Sleep disruption

An excessive workout close to bedtime might disturb the transition into the deeper stages of sleep, thereby lowering overall sleep quality.

However, the impact of late-night exercise on sleep varies from person to person. Some may find it energising, while others may experience overstimulation.

So, are you still wondering about the best time to hit the gym? Dr Jain explained that it varies based on individual schedules, preferences, and physiological factors. According to some research, late afternoon to early evening may be optimal for performance as muscle function and body temperature are at their peak during this time. However, morning workouts have their benefits such as boosting energy levels and metabolism throughout the day.

In short, working out before hitting bed is acceptable, but fitness enthusiasts must be cautious.
