Recently the first case of the JN.1 variant of COVID-19 was reported in Kerala. Since its emergence, the virus has proven to be highly contagious, with variants further complicating the situation. The symptoms caused by this sub-variant are quite similar to those caused by Covid-19. It can manifest in fever, sore throat, runny noses, etc.
Prof. Dr. Rahul Pandit, Chair, Critical Care, Sir H N Reliance Foundation Hospital, says, “Whenever a new variant or sub-lineage comes out, there are four questions which come to your mind. First is, is it rapidly transmissible than the current variant which is in circulation? Second, is it more lethal? Third, does it have an immune escape? That means, the immunity which we have acquired, would it have an immune escape phenomenon so that even people who have taken vaccine over, so-called immune, would have an infection again? And the fourth one is, would it have an ability to escape testing also?”
So, in this current JL.1 variant, it looks like there is some spike in protein mutation. And there is a possibility, that it may be a little bit more transmissible than the current variant. “We don’t have clarity yet on how much more and how rapid will that be. The best precaution is masking, especially in public places,” adds Dr Pandit.
Dr Rupkatha Sen, Chief Intensivist, Critical Care, SRV Hospitals, Chembur, says, “The elderly, individuals with pre-existing health conditions, and those with compromised immune systems remain at the forefront of this vulnerability. While the virus may affect certain groups more profoundly than others, it is essential to remember that the virus does not discriminate. This underscores the importance of our continued vigilance.”
As the festive season nears, it is especially important to highlight the importance of responsible behaviour. Basic precautions can have a substantial impact. “Social distancing, the wearing of masks, and maintaining hand hygiene should remain the foundation of our collective efforts against the virus. It’s advisable to restrict gatherings to smaller, close-knit groups and to ensure proper ventilation in indoor settings,” adds Dr Sen.
As we navigate the emergence of new COVID-19 variants like the JN.1, our collective responsibility becomes paramount. The evolving nature of the virus reminds us to stay informed, adhere to recommended guidelines, and prioritize the well-being of our communities. Let us embrace the festive season with a sense of caution, replacing large gatherings with intimate celebrations and virtual connections.
The resilience we’ve demonstrated throughout this pandemic is a testament to our shared commitment to public health. By adopting responsible behavior, we not only safeguard ourselves but also contribute to the protection of the most vulnerable among us. Let this season be marked not only by festivities but also by a renewed dedication to unity, empathy, and the safety of our fellow citizens.
Together, let’s face these challenges with fortitude, reinforcing the importance of vigilance, compassion, and responsible celebration. May the coming year bring healing, hope, and a continued sense of community in our collective journey towards overcoming the global health crisis.
“During these challenging times, our shared responsibility is evident: to celebrate in a responsible manner, protect the vulnerable, and prioritise public health,” signs off Dr Sen.
