Yellappa befriended Naxals in jail

Naxal Yellappa alias Dinaker gunned down by Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) during a combing operation near Subrahmanya joined the banned Maoists after befriending Ramesh alias Kuppuswamy in Raichur jail.

Sources told Express that Yellappa who was imprisoned in a murder case about seven years ago came into contact with Ramesh and other Maoists. After being trained in detonating explosives he was inducted into the naxalite movement and made as a member in Netravathy team headed by Vikram Gowda.

Police teams also stumbled on the dead naxal’s identity as Yellappa accidentally.  The speculations of the dead naxal being Kuppuswamy or Gopal made rounds initially.

After matching photographs of naxalites in the Raichur belt, members in investigating teams were convinced that dead naxal was Mareppa alias Mahesh alias Jan, a member of Varahi team.

When the police reached Mareppa’s house, they were also told about missing Yellappa, whose house was located in close proximity, sources said. The mystery over the identity ended once photographs of Yellappa was submitted to the investigating teams, police sources informed.
