The abandoned country-made bomb exploded when Kaarthik was playing with it on the terrace

A child was seriously injured as a country-made bomb exploded on the roof of a slum clearance board multi-storied tenement at Kuamaragurupallam here on Thursday.

Police said Kaarthik (8), son of Manigandan and Manjula, was severely injured in the thigh while he was playing with a “white ball”, which exploded with a loud noise.

Kaarthick was rushed to the Government Hospital and was admitted in the trauma ward.

Police led by SP, S Ramaraj, rushed to the spot and evacuated the residents of the D block, where the bomb went off. The police found another unexploded bomb in the same place and took possession of it.

Lalitha, one of the residents, told Express that there was a deafening sound following the explosion and people came out of their flats immediately.

Kaarthik, who was staying in A Block of the tenement, went to play at Chitra’s flat in the D block. The child, who went to the terrace, found the bomb and started playing with it thinking it to be a white ball, just when it exploded.

The explosion happened on the occasion of golden jubilee celebration of “De Jure Transfer Day” today and it came close on the heels of a bomb attack on a French citizen’s house on Thursday, when the nation celebrated its Independence Day. This is the third blast in Puducherry in one week’s time.

3 held for bomb attack

Meanwhile, police arrested three persons involved in the country-made bomb blast at a French citizen’s house.

The police were yet to trace the foster son of Vinter Denise, the French citizen staying at the house at Thambunaikan Street suspected to be behind the attack.

Police sources said the foster son was ousted from the house by Vinter following his association with bad elements. He used to pester the old lady for money, which she refused. A few months ago, bottles and other glass items were broken in front of the house and police reportedly failed to take any action though a complaint was filed with the Grand Bazaar police.

AINRC MLA and government whip G Nehru along with his followers went to the Grand Bazaar police station and urged the officials to take stern action against culprits involved in the blast.

Nehru, along with another party MLA Ashok Anand, then went and met Deputy Inspector General of Police, I D Shukla, demanding action in the bomb blast case.
