VELLORE: Just like in many other parts of the State, the AIADMK won the mayoral elections to the Vellore Corporation on Friday with a vote margin of 25,988 over her nearest rival from the DMK. The winner, P Karthiyayini, holds the distinction of being the first elected mayor of the Vellore Corporation. While Karthiyayini received 1,08,127 votes, DMK’s Dr Rajeswari got 82,139 votes. A total of 10 candidates were in the fray for the mayor post, which is reserved for women from the Scheduled Castes. Barring two major parties, all the other eight candidates lost their deposit. The counting of votes began at the Thanthai Periyar Polytechnic college here at 8 am. The counting of postal ballots gave anxious moments to the AIADMK camp as the party got just 100 votes of the total 383 votes polled. The DMK, on the other hand, was ahead with 234 votes in its kitty. The subsequent counting of votes from the electronic voting machines (EVMs) was also not in favour of the AIADMK. Karthiyayini was trailing behind Rajeswari by some 100 votes in the first four rounds of counting.Fifth round proved a turning point for Karthiyayini when she raced ahead of the DMK candidate by pulling a vote margin of 400 to 500 votes. However, the tenth round saw the DMK take a marginal lead of 200 votes.But that lead did not stay for long. In the eleventh round, the AIADMK candidate got more votes. From then, there was no looking back for her. She maintained her lead till the 29 round, which apparently is the last one. Thus Karthiyayini won by a comfortable margin of over 25,000 votes. Later, Presiding Officer Seeni Ajmal Khan announced the AIADMK candidate P Karthiyayini the winner and handed over the certificate.
