Noted classical vocalist Ustad Aqeel Ahmed, one of the last representatives of famous Agra gharana, has died. He was 80.
The singer died here yesterday following prolonged illness.
Born on November 20, 1933 in Agra, Aqeel Ahmed was the grandson of legendary singer Ustad Faiyaz Khan.
He specialised in the singing of 'khayals' in 'dhrupad' style and gave his vocals to Iqbal's 'Saare jahan se achcha' and also sang for films like 'Laila Majnu'.
Popularly known as Mohan Piya, Aqeel Ahmed was presented with a number of music awards.
His music is preserved in the ITC Music Researc Academy in Kolkata, his now Suhail Ahmed said.
He was buried in the old muslim cemetery near the Karbala grounds.
The singer is survived by his wife, a son and five daughters.
