UP Govt Orders One-Man Panel to Probe Mystery Behind Gumnami Baba
The state government's decision comes after the High court termed Gumnami Baba as an 'extraordinary person' and ordered a probe to find out his real identity.

The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday appointed a one-member Judicial commission to probe the mystery of Gumnami Baba who died in Faizabad in 1985. Many believe that Gumnami Baba was none other than Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

Bose is said to have died in a plane crash on August 18, 1945, in Formosa in Taiwan. Though, till date there’s uncertainty about whether the plane crash ever took place.

The state government's decision comes after the High court had earlier termed Gumnami Baba as an 'extraordinary person' and ordered a probe to find out his real identity.

Retired HC judge Vishnu Sahai has been appointed to head the one-member probe commission and submit the report within six months.

The government decision to appoint the commission comes a months after the Faizabad district administration opened the boxes belonging to the mysterious man.

Besides interesting photographs, the boxes also contained several letters. The documents recovered from him indicated his association with some key figures of Indian National army.

An escape route and some similar items which bore resemblance to Netaji were also found in his boxes which were opened.

Gumnami Baba alias Bhagwanji had spent the last 10 years of his life in a small rented room at RamBhavan in Faizabad. Following his death in 1985 and amid increasing controversy around his real identity, the administration had seized his belongings from the room and preserved them at the government treasury.

In 2006, the Justice Mukherjee commission dismissed the claim of Gumnami Baba being the Netaji. However, the report didn't end the speculation.

Later, a petition was moved in the Allahabad HC seeking fresh enquiry to find the identity of the man. In 2013, the HC ordered a probe terming him as a 'mysterious man' and also displaying his personal Belongings at the RamKatha Museum in Ayodhya.
