This film has been delayed for some time before it finally hit the screens last Friday. Ullasa Utsaha was contesting the biggie and much anticipated Prithvi starring Puneeth Rajkumar - underlining the illegal mining activities in the Bellary region aka the present scenario in Karnataka politics and the Reddy mining barons.
This is a small film by production value. The film stars Ganesh and Hindi serial actress Yami Goutham. Directed by Devraj Palan, this film is a romantic comedy.
Ullasa Utsaha is a remake of a Telegu movie Ullasamga Utsahamaga and a scene by scene rip off the original. The music is by debutant music director G.V Prakash Kumar (Don’t confuse for A.R Rahman's nephew)
The role is tailor made for Ganesh. Since the film was shot in different times changes in Ganesh's size is very evident. The actress Yami Gothmi looks very pretty in the film.
Ullasa Utsaha is partly shot in Bangalore and a briefly in Kolkata.
The film starts off with a tint of red and white to underline the flash back, where it shows the heroine’s childhood and her admiration for her fellow mate, Balaji-(Now this name will haunt you till the end), until Balaji's folks decide to shift town and Mahlakshmi (Yami Gothmi) goes uninformed and the entire film is waiting for an never ever seen Balaji.
In the present, Mahalakshimi or Lakshmi has grown up to be a gorgeous looking young girl. Her step mother wants to get away with her inheritance. In order to achieve her ploy she decides to marry Lakshmi off to a person of the later's choice. Lakshmi in turn understands this and runs away from home to her friend in the city.
The city awaits her with Preetham (Ganesh), a happy go lucky, spoilt child of a mechanic. He and his gang of good for friends play pranks on everyone evoking some genuine laughs in the film. His family stands by his deeds and gets him out clean.
One day Lakshmi and Preetham bump into each other and Preetham falls for Lakshmi. He tries to catch her attention but only end up being a nuisance. One day Lakshmi’s friend meets with an accident and unfortunately Preetham gets blamed for it. In order to cover up for Lakshmi's mistake her friend lies that Lakshmi suffers from 'Amenmenasia' (as pronounced in the film) meaning Amnesia and has memory for one day. (This triggers a game of 50 first dates syndrome - the movie starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore with Drew forgetting everything after the day is over.)
The film goes on with some more hilarious incidents, until the step mom re-enters the scene. The second half of the film is slow. You would want to skip right to the end. During the second half, the lead pair goes on a journey, missing the train at first followed by a spate of incidents to drag the movie, giving more time for the lead pair to kindle their love. Lakshmi however camouflages her feeling as she is set out to meet her childhood sweetheart Balaji. Then comes in the usual sacrifice, sympathy and the fight for love. In the end true love prevails.
The movie has the audience attention in the first half, which also has some genuine comic moments. Making the audience laugh is not an easy task; it takes a lot of innovation to do it right. Lame or repeated comedy gets the wrath of the audience and negative critiquing is bound to follow.
Ganesh has great comic timing, attitude and fills the character with his trade mark dialogue delivery. Yami has her looks but becomes a bore to watch her act and miss lip sync. Music is a passé.
Its an over all time pass film.
