THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Supreme Court-appointed committee on scientific evaluation of treasures locked up in the chambers of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple has decided to start its work from mid-February.After a joint meeting with the oversight committee here on Sunday, panel chairman and conservationist M V Nair said a mock-run would be conducted before the commencement of the actual evaluation. “In the meeting today we reviewed the progress made by Keltron in providing the equipment for the work. We expect to start the work by February 17 or 18,” he said.Nair said that a meeting of the panel would be held again on February 9 to assess its preparedness to begin the evaluation process.“We have placed before the state government high-end devices that we need for the documentation of the treasure. Keltron has already procured some of the gadgets and they assured that the rest would be purchased on time before the evaluation process begins,” he said. The state government had released `2.5 crore to Keltron to purchase the gadgets, which include Karatmeter — a fast, non-destructive and accurate tool for measuring precious metals and jewellery. As per the action plan submitted before the Supreme Court, the system of digital archiving of temple antiques (DATA) should be installed to ensure that there are no manual intervention. The main aim of creating the computerised inventory is for storing information regarding each item which can be retrieved easily. DATA will also help categorise the treasure into three as directed by the Supreme Court — those having historic and antique value, those having only physical value and those for daily use in the temple.
