Pingale seeks disciplinary action against 8 medical officers, deputy director of health services in the district

District Collector Dr Vijay Pingale has sent a report to the Director of Health service, Chennai, recommending disciplinary action against Deputy Director of Health Services of Tiruvannamalai Health Unit Division (HUD) and eight medical officers attached to Tiruvannamalai and Cheyyar HUDs for not conducting inquiries into maternity and infant deaths.

The Collector expressed dissatisfaction over the investigation into the death of three infants and three maternity deaths  in the district, during the maternity and infant mortality audit held at the Collectorate on Tuesday.

Despite his direction for all doctors, including private practitioners who attended to the patients, to be present for the audit, he found many doctors absent. He also found that in a few cases, the medical officers had failed to collect and compile facts correctly.

Following this, the Collector directed the officials to send a report to the director to take disciplinary action against eight medical officers and deputy director of Health Services, Tiruvannamalai.

Dr Pingale said, “Doctors and medical officers should take note of the lessons learnt in each maternal and infant death. They have to come up with suggestions that include the possible intervention at a particular stage of the case that could save the patient.”

He also directed that all doctors who attended the patients to appear before the audit to be held during the next hearing, failing which, stern action would be taken against the doctors who remain absent.
