MALAPPURAM: Thousands of believers thronged the venue of the mass iftar and prayer meeting held at Swalath Nagar here on Friday evening. More than one lakh people broke  fast together on the occasion, claimed the largest congregation of Muslim believers in the country. It was the 25th anniversary of the mammoth prayer meeting and mass iftar or ganised by Ma’din Academy, a Muslim charitable organisation, on the 27th day of the Ramadan month, which is considered very special by the believers.Delivering the keynote address on the occasion, Khaleelul Bukhari, chairman of the Ma’din Academy, urged the believers to restrain from all activities of terrorism and enforce the unity and social harmony of the country. “One should practise extreme love, than extreme terrorism,” he said.  The believers who participated in the event pledged to “eliminate the menace of terrorism and work for world peace”.The event exemplified the communal harmony in the area with Hindu families offering their cooperation and support for the smooth conduct of the function. To control the overflow of the believers, 10 different venues were arranged on both sides of the National Highway 213, apart from the main one on the Ma’din campus. The guests, according to the organisers, were offered the food prepared by the families in the region. Of the 10 venues, five were reserved for women.A 5,555-member reception committee took care of the conduct of the event while a brigade of 2,000 volunteers were deployed in the venues to help the guests. To control the traffic to the venue, police authorities diverted the traffic along the NH 213 between Malappuram and Valluvamburam.
