If you plough fields, especially cotton fields with a tractor, the grass does not get uprooted properly. Also, these tractors end up crushing the plants near the edges. Hence, farmers have been resorting to machines. However, some farmers are still ploughing with the help of oxen or bulls.
Interestingly, those who own bulls are renting them out for ploughing at rates of Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 per acre in a Telangana village. They plough about four acres of land a day and the farmers can earn up to Rs 5,000 per day.
In modern times, every task in agriculture has a machine available to do it conveniently without much hassle. Shankar Reddy from Kadaparthy village in Telangana has been farming since his childhood. In an interview with Local18, he mentioned that while farming with machines is convenient and efficient, this has led to the farmers becoming lazy. When farmers plough the cotton fields with tractors, the plants end up dying and not even grass can grow in that field.
In the past, oxen or bulls were used to plough the land. This resulted in better crop yield and effective weed removal. It also helped in making the soil airy. Currently, in villages, farmers continue to use oxen for farming. Typically, Shankar Reddy earns anywhere between Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000 per day.
Farming with bulls and ox results in higher yields for crops like cotton and rice. Additionally, farmers used to pour pond soil which was full of essential nutrients needed to grow crops on the soil. Also, natural fertilizers, which included manure were used. This resulted in superior-quality crops. But now, farmers have switched to chemical fertilisers and pesticides to prevent the crop from diseases This has compromised the quality of the crops to a large extent. While previously, the average lifespan of humans was 100 years, now due to consumption of chemical-laden food, the lifespan has significantly decreased.
