India has had a long history of British rule and its quest for independence. Our leaders and freedom fighters have struggled for many years to bring independence to the country. Many freedom movements were organised by our leaders and travelled to different parts of the country, involving and agitating people to join their movements. During these movements, leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi planted several saplings in different parts of the country to support their freedom movement. During one such visit to Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh, Mahatma Gandhi planted a banyan sapling at the railway station as part of the 1942 Quit India Movement campaign.
According to reports, it has been found that the same banyan sapling has now turned into a huge tree. As part of the Quit India movement campaign against the British rulers, Mahatma Gandhi travelled across the country by train, made people aware, and got down at Dusi Railway Station in Srikakulam district. During his visit, he planted a banyan plant there. Currently, that banyan plant has grown into a huge tree and has spread over two acres. It gave shade to many passers-by. This has turned out to be a visionary move by the Indian leader.
Srikakulam district is among those districts that played a major role in the independence movement. There have been many political leaders who have come from this area. As per reports, Mahatma Gandhi visited the district in 1942 during the Quit India Movement. Gandhiji visited Amudalavalasa Mandal village and organised a huge meeting at the railway station. People from all over the nearby areas attended the meeting.
Local people have revealed that the same plant has become a big tree, and it has become a symbol of the old assembly. The tree is considered the pride of the village. The tree has been decorated in a way that shows that it was planted by Mahatma Gandhi.
