KOCHI: The Corporation has floated the tender for conducting a ‘total station survey’ in connection with the construction of service roads along both sides of the major canals in the city. The service roads are expected to ease the traffic problems in the city to a certain extent. The survey will collect basic information, including the availability of land on the side of the canals for constructing the roads. “The tender process for the survey is almost over and is estimated to cost `1 lakh. Once the survey is over, we will be able to know the availability of land. Thevara-Perandoor canal will be taken up as a pilot project. The project will be expanded after looking at its feasibility,” town planning officer K S Subhash said.It has been planned to have a road with a width of 4 metres. Normally, 6 metres is required for constructing a road but considering the availability of land, the width has been limited to 4 metres. One of the major hurdles for implementing the service road project was land acquisition. “Most of the areas are encroached by private parties. These lands should be evicted,” an official said. He also said that funds for land acquisition and rehabilitation are the other challenges, he said, and added that the Corporation would go ahead with the project. According to the Corporation, the service roads are also helpful while de-silting the canals. At present, lack of service roads was the major hindrance to cleaning the canals. If there are service roads, it would be easy for the JCB and other vehicles to get access to the canals for cleaning purpose.Around 20 canals, including Thevara-Perandur, Edappally, Karanakodam, Pandarachal, Pashnithodu, Pallichal, and Changadampokku are passing through the city.
