Tarmac mishap leaves two hurt

A mini-van lost control and ploughed into an arm-lift used to load large cargo into an aircraft, leaving the driver and his co-passenger injured.

Around 11 am on Monday, the vehicle, contracted to a private airline, was moving near parking bay number 5. According to sources, the vehicle suddenly veered out of control and rammed the working arm-lift nearby.

Airport staff and loaders rushed to their rescue and rushed the two men, Kumar and Maruthamuthu, to a private hospital in Pazhavanthangal. The arm-lift that was being operated by air operations contractor Bhadra Services was mildly damaged in the accident, as was the cargo plane.

An inquiry has begun into the accident and airport officials would be investigating the cause for the accident. It may be recalled that there have been a spate of minor accidents involving tractors, airline buses, tow vehicles and baggage trucks, in the recent past.

Boy’s Body Fished Out

The body of an 11-year-old boy who drowned while fishing in Old Tambaram Tank in West Tambaram was recovered by the police on Monday morning. Police  identified the victim as Class VI student Vignesh, a resident of  West Tambaram. A case has been registered and investigation is on.

Tippler Electrocuted

An act of bravado by an inebriated 36-year-old, who adventurously tried testing power supply on a high voltage wire with his bare hands, turned fatal on Monday after he was electrocuted in Pallikaranai.

Police sources said Kumar, a realtor from Pallikaranai, visited a tea shop in the area on Monday,  allegedly in an inebriated state. While he was chatting, he saw a wire hanging down from a high-voltage electric pole right next to the tea shop.  He was told that the wire snapped about 20 minutes ago and the area’s EB officials had been alerted. He was also warned not to venture near the pole. But, Kumar allegedly said that he would check if there was power supply in the wire and went ahead and touched it. Police said he died on the spot owing to the electric shock.

Burglary Bid

A burglary was attempted at a jeweller in Ambattur Main Road, run by local resident Ramesh, on Sunday night. Police said the burglars could not open a locker where the jewels were kept.
