Suspect In Kolkata Doctor's Rape-Murder Harassed Woman After Getting Phone Number From Prescription: Report

Sanjay Roy, the man arrested for the rape and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, allegedly harassed a woman after getting her phone number from a doctor’s prescription, according to a report in News18 Bangla.

Around three months ago, the homemaker took her son for treatment at RG Kar Hospital, where she met Roy, who helped her purchase medicines. Roy interacted with her and obtained her phone number from a prescription, according to the report quoting a source.

Roy allegedly made frequent calls to her the woman. He not only harassed the homemaker over the phone but also pressured her to meet in person, with claims of threats being made as well. The Kolkata police obtained the housewife’s number from Roy’s call records (CDR) and have summoned her to Lalbazar for questioning.

Roy had multiple failed marriages. He had easy access to several departments of the hospital due to his role as a civic volunteer in the police welfare board. Civic volunteers are contractual staff who are recruited to assist police in various kinds of work, including traffic management and disaster response. They are paid around Rs 12,000 a month.

He was reportedly part of a racket in the hospital that charged patients’ relatives for getting admitted. He would also charge patients’ relatives for finding a bed at nearby nursing homes if they did not get a bed at the government hospital. Police also found porn on his mobile phone during their probe.

The RG Kar rape-murder has caused a stir across the country. The seminude body of the woman PGT doctor, a second-year student in the chest medicine department, was found inside the seminar hall of the hospital on Friday. She was on duty on Thursday night, and her body bore multiple injury marks. The preliminary autopsy report indicated sexual abuse before her murder, leading her father to allege that she was raped and murdered inside the hospital.

Roy was arrested after his activities were found to be suspicious, and CCTV captured him entering and exiting the seminar hall. Roy is said to have admitted to committing the crime during interrogation.
