Efforts were on to catch a stray monkey on the prowl along the Park Gate Road after the simian attacked a four-year-old boy and a woman on Friday.
Soon after the incident, forest officials placed a trap cage along the stretch. Locals also complained that the animal has been on the prowl in the area for the past couple of days.
Four-year-old Arul Raj, along with his grandmother Thangamani, was on his way to meet his father, a life-term convict in the Central Prison, when the monkey pounced on him.
The boy was carrying a snack box and the monkey was trying to snatch it, recalled witnesses.
A visibly shaken Thangamani said, “The monkey was huge and I had to struggle to make it let go off the boy.”
Arul suffered bite injuries on both hands. Local residents rushed him to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, and he was discharged in the afternoon.
The simian’s other victim, Madukkarai-resident Pappathi, suffered minor injuries on her legs, sources said.
Forest officials said they came close to capturing the animal on Friday. “We placed the cage trap in the morning itself after learning about the incident. But, some locals pelted stones and chased the monkey, which spoiled our effort, a forest official said.
