New Delhi: The Union Minister of Human Resource Development (MHRD) Smriti Irani spoke to mother of Rohith Vemula – a Dalit scholar who committed after being ostracised by the Hyderabad University - over phone and assured her that justice will be done on the basis of a judicial inquiry.
Expressing her sorrow over Rohith's suicide, she promised justice to Radhika (his mother). This is for the first time when the minister made contact with Radhika.
Rohith, was one of the five Dalit scholars, who was expelled by the university in 2015 for allegedly attacking a student activist belonging to Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in August.
He was doing his PhD in science technology and society studies for the past two years.
On January 17, Rohith managed to enter the NRS hostel, locked himself and hanged himself reportedly after being depressed over his expulsion from the university.
Meanwhile, Radhika refused to meet Vice-Chancellor Appa Rao Podile when he went to her house on Friday. She told the VC that she would meet him only on the campus along with four other students who were suspended.
