HYDERABAD: Following the credo of TED — ideas worth spreading — the essence of the speeches that are going to be delivered revolve around the power of ideas. Speaking at a press meet that was organised on Thursday to introduce TED, Arvind Dutta curator and licensee for TEDx Deccan said, “We have brought TEDx to Hyderabad to help cultivate a dialogue in the city. There are so many innovative, inspiring and industrious people right here, this is a platform for them to foster and share their ideas on.” The process to set up TEDx started six months ago with the organising committee approaching enterprising people from various fields like health, culture, film and music, each with a vision and an idea to make a difference. Jaskeerat Bedi, the co-organiser said, “The awareness of TED talks are restricted to a very select intellectual audience, but its ideas are an inspiration to many. Therefore we’ve chosen our speakers keeping that in mind.” Some of the speakers from the panel of 16 speakers participating in TEDx Deccan include Sujata Burla, a social entrepreneur, Jayawant Naidu, a guitar maestro and musician, Dr Raghuram, an oncoplastic breast surgeon, Williams Nkurunziza, high commissioner for the Republic of Rwanda, Dinaz, a fitness expert and Dr Jayprakash Narayan, politician. TED was started in 1984 as an annual event in California, USA, but now hosts these conferences in Palm Springs and Long Beach, USA, besdies the local TED-independent, TEDx conferences which happen largely throughout Europe and Asia. Speaking of his experience with TED, Dr Raghuram said, “I wasn’t aware of TED talks until recently. But they were so inspiring, I got hooked. Right now we are trying to highlight the impact of TED in India. As a speaker, it was challenging for me to figure out what to talk about. But my mother’s battle with breast cancer was a turning point for me. So it wasn’t too difficult to find my inspiration.” Actor Kamaraju, who was also present at the press conference said, “Being chosen to speak at TEDx Deccan meant I had to rediscover myself. But besides that, it also means I have to do that and put it across to an audience in as interesting a way as possible in under 18 minutes. That is a real challenge.” TED talks follow a standard procedure — speakers get a maximum of 18 minutes for presentation and are encouraged to make it as visually appealing as possible while still conveying their idea to an intellectual yet diverse crowd. Summing up the importance of being a part of TEDx, Naidu said, “Ideas and innovation do not come easy in life. It takes a certain amount of inspiration. To be able to listen to someone who can give you that is what makes this different.”
