New Delhi: Seven visually impaired candidates who had in 2008 cleared the IAS examination but were denied induction, have finally received their orders following intervention by the Prime Minister, a representative group for persons with disabilities said on day.

The National Platform for the Rights of Disabled (NPRD), that had taken up the cases of the nine such candidates, said that while seven of them have received orders, two were still left out.

The group's representatives accompanied by CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in November last year and represented their case before him.

A statement by NPRD Assistant Convener Muralidharan said that despite favourable court orders and even the Central Administrative Tribunal, the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) had refused to induct them.

This amounted to "blatant discrimination" and "violation of the provisions of the Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995," it said.

While one of the candidates has got IAS, and two have been inducted into IFS, others have received orders for IRPS, ICA, Indian Postal Service, and Ordinance Factory.

Brinda Karat thanked the Prime Minister in a letter on Tuesday for his intervention in the matter.

"Your intervention has helped in setting right a blatant discrimination and violation of the provisions of the Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995," she wrote.
