Seven UP youth injured in group clash in Thoothukudi

Seven persons from Uttar Pradesh were injured in a group clash here on Monday.

According to police, a large number of youth from Uttar Pradesh are engaged in construction works of a private copper smelting plant here.

Nine of them stayed in a rented house in VMS Nagar, Thoothukudi.

R Shanmugiah (20) of Anna Nagar, who developned acquaintance with the North Indian youth, met them often at their place and had booze parties.

On one such occasion on Sunday night, Shanmugiah suddenly picked up a quarrel with them and was chased away.

Irked by the incident, Shanmugiah with some of his friends, including Kannan and Mani, went to VMS Nagar with clubs and knives, and brutally attacked the UP youth. Before fleeing the spot, they locked the house from outside.In the attack, Ram Prakash (19), Raju (21), Manohar Sankar (24), Babloo (20) Kalim Khan (20), Nithyanand (28), Bijay (25) and Lalji (35) were injured and admitted to the Thoothukudi Government Medical College Hospital. Four of them were discharged from hospital later.

Based on the complaint lodged by L Bijay, SIPCOT police, have been registered cases under sections 147, 148, 427, 323, 324 and 307 of IPC. The police have arrested Shanmugiah and are on the lookout for his associates.
