Seed farms ready for harvest

Seed farms on 439 hectares in Vellore district are all set for harvest. This was announced by director of Seed and Organic Certification, S Balakrishnan, who inspected the district earlier last week.

According to Hemanth Kumar Pandey, assistant director of Seed Certification, farmers in the district had raised seed farms to produce quality seeds of paddy, groundnut, pulses and small millets. These farms produce quality seeds which could yield five tons of paddy per hectare, 600 to 700 kg of ground nut per hectare and 500 to 600 kg of pulses. The district has certified around 150 tons of paddy till August this year, he added.

The director had also visited the government and private seed farms and monitored the seed certification activities carried out in the district. He also visited the private seed farms owned by women farmers Malathi, Indira and Meena who had cultivated the new variety of red gram -- LRG41.
