New Delhi: Assam is on high alert on Saturday on the ocassion of ULFA's Foundation Day. Police sources have indicated that cadres of the banned outfit could cause a disruption to make its presence felt.
The Home Ministry has asked Assam and neighbouring states to tighten security in sensitive locations.
Special attention has been given to the districts of Tinsukia, Sibsagar, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Goalpara and Nalbari, the sources said.
Additional police pickets were posted in vulnerable areas while entry and exit routes of important towns sealed. Senior ULFA leaders including Rajiv Das and Rinku Bhuyan, wife of the elusive commander-in-chief Paresh Barua, were reportedly hiding in Lakhimpur district, the sources said.
ULFA was formed in the historic Ranghar of Sibsagar on April 7 in 1979.
