Melbourne: Germany's captain Moritz Fuerste has been named FIH's Player of the Year here on Saturday, beating Australian Jamie Dwyer, India's Sardar Singh, Fuerste's team-mate Tobias Hauke and the Netherlands' Robert van der Horst.
It's the first since 2002 that a German player has won the award, while it's the first time that Fuerste got this honour, having nominated for it in 2011 and 2010. He led the side to Olympic glory at the London Games in 2012, helping the side win the gold medal.
The 28- year-old was also part of the German side that won gold at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the 2006 World Cup in Mönchengladbach, and the 2011 and 2007 Indoor World Cups.
"I am really honored to be named the Player of Year," Fuerste was quoted as saying after receiving the award from FIH President Leandro Negre. "It's a great way to end a very memorable year for me."
Fuerste's Olympic team-mate Florian Fuchs was named the FIH Young Player of the Year (U21).
