KOCHI: The issue of safety has gone off the track for the people who are regularly crossing the railway track near Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in Ponnekkara. With the death of a 42-year-old who was hit by a speeding train on Monday, the cases of accidental death at the crossing has gone above ten. Most of the people who use the route are either residents or the people coming to the hospital. Residents of the area have been demanding some immediate security measures to be put in place.“Those who use this route are usually the sick people seeking medical aid at the hospital. The foot over bridge is not of much help to them and crossing the railway tracks proves to be a tedious process,” said Kalamassery police officials.According to Mahatma Gandhi Resident Association convener Francis K A, such deaths have become common in the area as there is no railway crossing. Residents said that the only solution is to speeden up the process to build the promised RoB as the project is still lying on paper.“Various authorities and residents’ associations are striving to make the RoB a reality. However, the Railways is yet to give a nod to the project,” Francis added.
