KAKINADA: A sum of Rs 186.36 crore has been sanctioned for the Municipal Corporation of Kakinada(MCK) under the Andhra Pradesh Municipal Development Project (APMDP) to solve the drinking water problem in the port city.The government issued GO No 703 in this regard recently. The funds were provided by the World Bank.The port city has witnessed rapid development in recent years with the increase in oil and gas exploration in Krishna Godavari Basin.A Special Economic Zone and a Petro Corridor were also proposed in the East Godavari district headquarters town with a population of 3 lakh and a floating population of 50,000 a day.The outskirts of the city are expanding rapidly. The municipal corporation is not able to meet the drinking needs of the growing population.Hence, it was proposed to take up a drinking water project keeping in view the future needs of the city.Of the total allocation for the water project, 70 per cent of the funds are in the form of grant.The state government will bear 20 per cent of the project cost and the remaining 10 per cent of the cost will be borne by the municipal corporation.As part of the project, new water pipelines will be laid. A summer storage tank will be constructed near Achampeta junction.Two more overhead tanks will also be built. The MCK engineering officials said the project was envisaged to meet the drinking water needs of the port city up to 2026.The project works will begin soon, they said.
