Rizwanur case: Judge threatened, security tightened
Magistrate Chatterjee found a postcard lying at his desk Thursday afternoon.

Kolkata: Security has been tightened for a metropolitan magistrate, who was hearing the Rizwanur Rehman death case, after he received a threat letter, the police said here Saturday.

"The seventh metropolitan magistrate Bibhas Chatterjee is being given special security cover after he received a threat letter on Thursday afternoon.

Armed policemen have been posted outside the court and his chamber. There will be armed guards to escort him to his residence," Jawed Shamim, city police deputy commissioner (detective department), told reporters on Saturday.

"As for the identity of the letter sender, we are looking into the matter," Shamim added.

According to a police official at the city police headquarters, Chatterjee found a postcard lying at his desk Thursday afternoon.

"The letter without the sender's name said that if Chatterjee cared for his life, either he must step aside from the Rizwanur Rehman death case or let go Rizwanur's industrialist in-laws Todis, who were accused of provoking him to commit suicide," said the official, requesting anonymity.

Chatterjee issued the arrest warrant against the Todis when he was in charge of the 14th Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court.

Rizwanur, a 30-year-old graphic designer working with a multimedia firm, was found dead Sep 21 last year near the railway tracks at Kolkata's Patipukur suburb, barely a month after marrying Hindu girl Priyanka Todi, daughter of industrialist Ashok Todi.

The Calcutta High court Aug 14 said Rizwanur was forced to commit suicide last year and asked the CBI to file charge sheets in the lower court against six people - his father-in-law, Ashok Todi and his brother Pradip Todi, and four police officials Gyanwant Singh, Ajay Kumar, Sukanta Chakraborty and Krishnendu Das.
