Guwahati: Accepting that waste management by civic authorities of the city is not up-to-the-mark, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday said "increase of waste is a sign of prosperity and high standard of living". Addressing a press conference here to express his optimism about Congress victory in the forthcoming Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) election next week, he said the authorities have done well under his party's leadership.
"Increase of waste material is a sign of prosperity and high standard of living. See in America, you will find lots of waste," Gogoi said in a humorous tone. Economic condition of people in the city has improved and they are consuming products in a way leading to generation of lot of waste materials, he added.
But waste management is not up-to-the-mark, he said and urged the public to vote for his party in the GMC elections on June 19.
