When Joseph Varkey’s gold ring went missing, none of his near and dear ones had  thought that it could have been swallowed.

But Varkey began to cough persistently ever since. When medicines failed to cure the cough, he was asked to undergo an X-ray test. The relatives were in for a shock when the X-ray showed the ring lodged in his lungs!

But thanks to technology, it has been was removed without a surgery.

A team of doctors of the Ernakulam Medical Centre retrieved the ring via endoscopy.

A team led by ENT surgeon Dr V D Pradeep Kumar, and Dr Sunil George, anaesthesia specialists Dr Murukesh Kumar and Dr Mathew Varghese removed the ring using a broncoscope.

The ring was in the carina, the ridge situated between the two primary bronchi in the lungs.

It is usual for children to swallow bottle caps or seeds which are found in their lungs, but rarely does a ring gets stuck in the lungs, and that too of an adult, said Dr Pradeep Kumar.

The patient left with his gold ring after a day and is hale and healthy.
