The state government will start decentralised procurement of rice from this year on a pilot basis in seven districts. As per the guidelines of the central government, the state will start the decentralised procurement in order to cater to the needs of public distribution system (PDS) and mid-day meal scheme locally.
Under the new system, the rice could be procured by the Civil Supplies Corporation, directly from the millers. And, the corporation will distribute it for PDS and other schemes in the same district from where it was procured.
Earlier, it was the Food Corporation of India (FCI) which worked as a nodal agency for the distribution of rice in the state.
"The staff have been given training by the FCI. The procurement by IKP and farmers' organisations will be taken up simultaneously in all the districts," civil supplies minister Sridhar Babu said.
After a discussion with CM N Kiran Kumar Reddy here on Monday, Union civil supplies minister KV Thomas appreciated the government's effort for the step.
