New Delhi: Google released its year-end Zeitgeist list for 2011. Google's annual list is an indicator of what's hot and happening in the online world. The search engine leader, each year, analyses billions of search queries to come up with the Zeitgeist - the spirit of the time.

13-year-old American eighth grader Rebecca Black was the queen of search queries in 2011. She became an overnight sensation when Comedy Central posted her single 'Friday' on their blog under the title 'Songwriting Isn't For Everyone'. Google's new social networking service Google+ was the second among the fastest-rising global queries in 2011.

The fad "Planking" where people get photographed and pictures posted online of them lying face down in an unusual location also gets an "honourable mention".

Apple-related queries take up three spots in the top 10 global search terms in 2011 - iPhone 5 (No.6), Steve Jobs (No.9) and iPad2 (No.10).

In India "Facebook" was the fastest rising search query, "World Cup 2011" that India lifted figures at No.4. Anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare (No.7) and Poonam Pandey (No.9), the model who promised to strip if India lifts the cricket World Cup also figured in the list of the fastest rising search queries from India.

After being relegated to the No.7 position in 2010 among the fastest rising people on Google search from India, Katrina Kaif regained the No.1 spot in 2011. Other most searched people included, Anna Hazare, Salman Khan, Poonam Pandey, Justin Bieber, Aishwarya Rai, Sachin Tendulkar, Kareena Kapoor, Steve Jobs and Priyanka Chopra. Interestingly, according to Google, IPL made bigger news than World Cup 2011.

Google has also added improved visualisations to its 2011 Zeitgeist site (www.googlezeitgeist.com).
