Rashomon to be screened on October 19

KOCHI: The Cochin Film Society is screening the acclaimed 1950 Japanese film Rashomon with Malayalam sub-titles for the first time.The screening will be held at the YMCA Hall here on October 19 at 6 pm.Directed by the legendary Akiro Kurosawa, the crime mystery film revolves around an incident in ancient Japan where a woman is raped and her husband killed.Cinematographed by Kazuo Miyagawa, the film was shot directly into the sun. Interestingly, the crew used a mirror to reflect sunlight during shots of actors after natural light proved a bit weak for the director’s liking.Rashomon had famously introduced Kurosawa and the cinema of Japan to Western audiences and is considered one of his masterpieces. Shot in minimalist settings, the film won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and also received an Honourary Award at the 24th Academy Awards.
